Frequently Asked Questions

How are the canvas prints made?

Firstly we digitally print onto professional quality primed artists canvas using a flab-bed U.V. digital printer. Once printed, we stretch mount the canvas onto artist-quality wooden stretcher bars using a box-mount. This produces a frame with imaged edges for that 'gallery look'.

How long will my canvas last?

You can expect as long a life from your canvas print as you would from any artwork, provided you treat it well. Unlike most canvas printers, we do not print using inexpensive ink-jet printers, rather we use a high-end printer that cures its print with U.V. light. The resulting prints are extremely U.V. durable (i.e. they don't fade readily when exposed to sunlight).

What kinds of image can I use?

We support the uploading of both JPG image files and PDF artwork files. Most digital camera's will output JPG files. PDF is a format mainly used by graphic artists. In this format you can have complex graphics including text and photographic elements.

What size/resolution image will I require?

This site will warn you if you try to use an image that is too low in resolution, or if you try to zoom-in too much when placing your photo. Rather than talk in complex pixel-counts, we suggest minimum file sizes based on megapixels. Nowadays, most cameras are 3 megapixels and over. Our smallest canvas frame will require an image of at least 1 megapixels, whereas our largest sizes require 5 megapixels or more. There is no problem using an image with more megapixels than the minimum required – in fact this is better. We suggest you try to always take your images in a high as resolution as possible for canvas use.

What if I want a Canvas Print of an original photograph, negative or transparency?

We do provide a scanning service for such events. Simply print out the form, which is also available from the photo upload page on the site. Send this form, along with your image, to us at the address indicated on the form. We will scan and send the image back to you by email, for you to upload and place, or we will produce the canvas frame directly – depending on the instructions on the form. There is a small charge for scanning and images requiring repair will incur an additional cost depending on the effort required.

How can I order online?

It's a simple process, and there is a training video accessible from the main menu if you want to see a guided how-to. Firstly you select your product, then your orientation. Next you select the finish you want (e.g. colour, black & white, etc) and upload your image or select an image from the library. Finally you provide delivery and payment information. Canvas prints take 7-10 business days and are delivered by courier to your nominated delivery point.

What different kinds of 'looks' are available?

If you upload a colour JPG file, you can also select what kind of look you would like to have in the printed result. There are many choices including original colour, black & white, sepia, as well as many artistic and photographic effects. These effects are applied by our system to your image and you can see a small preview of the result after you upload. If you decide you don't like that effect, you can use the 'back' button in canvasart (not the one in your browser) to go back and choose a different style. Please allow a few seconds for processing after you have uploaded your image. Remember also that black & white jpg images or PDF files can not be changed to different looks by the system – please select the default 'colour' setting for such uploaded files.

What will the print quality be like?

Our canvas prints use the highest quality materials and the very best printer for this type of printing. Canvas is a natural product however and there may be minor inconsistencies in the surface as a result. These artifacts are what you would expect from any canvas artwork. Image quality is the single biggest issue in determining the finished look. If you upload a poor image (over or under exposed, out-of-focus, etc) then your canvas will reflect this. Please remember that computer monitors always display images with more vibrancy than any printed product.

How can I hang my Canvas Print?

Our canvas prints are lightweight and come supplied with a hanging line on the back. Unless they have an optional wooden frame-edge, they do not require much support and generally hardware-store hooks will do the trick. If in doubt, ask a home-handyman.
